As one of the earliest American colonies, South Carolina is rich in history, especially from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. A few refurbished forts still exist, as well as historic homes, the Charleston Slave Market downtown and naval museums with World War II ships on display.
The blockbuster movie The Patriot (2000) starring Mel Gibson was filmed entirely on location across several South Carolina locations, including the Darby farm in Chester County and historic Brattonsville, Rock Hill, Edisto Island, Middleton Place Plantation, Lowrys and Cypress Gardens. Learn more here and design your own tour to discover more about real historical inspirations for this film from South Carolina.
Charleston is filled with historical sites, and perhaps none is more beautiful and interesting than The City Market downtown. Established in the 1790s, the market stretches for four city blocks from the architecturally-significant Market Hall, which faces Meeting Street, through a continuous series of one-story market sheds, the last of which terminates at East Bay Street. The entire complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Market Hall and Sheds and was further designated a National Historic Landmark.
Patriot’s Point Naval and Maritime Museum is a hands-on history lesson located in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, across the harbor from the city of Charleston. Tour World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, destroyer USS Laffey, submarine USS Clamagore and the only Vietnam War Experience Exhibit in the United States. Packed with plenty of things to do and learn, you may find that one day here this summer isn’t enough.
Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie are refurbished battle sites from the American Civil War, Fort Sumter being the location of the first shot fired in the war. Guarding Charleston from attack from the sea, they became the sites of a standoff between federal troops at Fort Sumter and Confederate troops at Fort Moultrie. Visit the sites and museums and soak in the rich history of one of the most pivotal sites in our history, including how they played a part in the Revolutionary War, and our defense until 1947.

Despite all the setbacks in the world, Charleston is a city that refuses to stay still. Located in South Carolina, Charleston is one of the most popular and beloved cities in the South of the United States. Widely considered one of the friendliest cities to visit in the US and the world, the port city is a delightful stop that gathers history, entertainment, and quality of life under a single roof.

But that doesn't mean the people of Charleston are content with just that. This year has been packed with amazing announcements and events that show just how fast Charleston is growing. So let's take a look at what's new at Charleston this year, who knows; if you are moving soon then Charleston might just end up on your radar.
The Exchange at Maybank
This mixed-use commercial center has been the talk of all locals and visitors and for good reason. While it's under construction right now, it's believed the first stages will be completed this year; and so far it looks breathtaking. Combining living spaces with office buildings and beautiful gardens, The Exchange at Maybank is just an experience on its own.

When completed, The Exchange is expected to include 12 buildings and combine the best parts of the Charleston community with the bustling commerce you expect out of a commercial center. The most important development, however, comes in the form of its Medical Facilities, which will provide service to Charleston's ever-growing community. All of which only solidifies Charleston's position as one of the best places to live in the USA.
The International African American Museum
The IAAM is quickly proving to be one of Charleston's cultural hotspots, and it isn't finished yet. The Museum is meant to showcase the pivotal role of South Carolina in the history and development of the United States, and to rekindle the passion of its inhabitants in their legacy and culture.

Combining classic displays with cultural events and interactive expositions, the Museum is planned to be a revolutionary experience in Charleston. With almost a hundred million on the line, there's no doubt the IAAM is going to be unlike anything else in the city.
The Master Distiller's Experience
Firefly Distillery is Charleston's oldest distillery, but that doesn't mean it can't reinvent itself this year like any other business. Starting this year, Firefly has introduced their Master's Distiller's Experience which allows visitors to enjoy a personal experience with the most famous spirits from the Distillery.

Up to 12 people at a time will be allowed to taste the wonderful selection at Firefly, including vodka, rum, bourbon, and much more. And the best part is that each spirit is accompanied by a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturing process of each one. It's both a social event and a learning opportunity all in one.
And much more...
Charleston has no shortage of upcoming business and locales: From the downright gorgeous Sweetgrass Inn, the modern Ryder Hotel, new locations of the traditional Crust Wood Fired Pizza, and beyond, there's no shortage of new businesses and opportunities in Charleston. And the reason is simple; people love Charleston.

We are talking about one of the best cities in the world to buy a home and enjoy a friendly and fulfilling life. So you can fully expect to see this growth every single year at Charleston because more and more people are choosing to find their home here.2021-07-19T08:00:00-07:002021-07-19T08:34:41-07:00Lee Willeytag:jeffcookrealestate.com,2012-09-20:11005Fun Learning Activities to Do With Your Kids This Summer
One primary goal for most parents during the summer holiday is to keep their kids' minds sharp and stimulated. The long summer holidays can affect learning in all subjects. Luckily, you can do many activities with your children during the summer from your own home to combat the brain drain. Here are some fun learning activities you can do with your children.
Obstacle Courses
A fun mind-stimulating game you can do for your kids is an obstacle course. You can set it up in a room in your house or even out on the patio or backyard. The best part is that you do not have to buy extra supplies. All you need is to be creative and use the products that you already have in your house. A typical obstacle course should have something to walk on, crawl under, jump through, solve a riddle, and there are endless possibilities of what you can add to make it your own. You can make it as challenging as you want so that it is suitable for your children.
Plant a Garden
An engaging thing to do with the kids this summer is to plant a garden with them in your yard. This is a way to incorporate some science lessons into your summer routine as you can discuss and monitor the growth of the different types of plants or flowers, the different processes involved, and the different species of plants you want to grow. There are numerous lessons you can bring to life in your yard, and you can even explore the best things to grow for your location in South Carolina.
Rainy Day Plans
These activities are mentally stimulating for your kids and will give them things to do when they are cooped up inside. You can turn your bonus room into a fortress with cardboard boxes, sheets or blankets, and pillows or cushions. Find a common area in your house that you can begin building a lego castle and continue to expand on it all summer. Camp inside with your sleeping bags laid out in the bonus room or living room. All of these activities can be connected to studying history as you explore historic battles, forts, castles, and journeys.
Hide And Seek
This is an old-school game that never grows old. The game involves one person closing their eyes and the other one hiding. The one who was closing their eyes then has to find the person who was hiding. This is a fun game that helps to improve the analytical skills of your child, not to mention practicing counting. The game helps young developing minds to be able to distinguish a viable hiding spot from a bad one. It is a game that the whole family can enjoy and you can make spin-offs of this to connect it to learning materials such as hiding in places that begin with a certain letter of the alphabet, practicing spelling and writing by making a list of the places you hide, or counting by different groupings like counting by 5’s or 10’s.
Sports
The other way that you can help in keeping your children’s brains active is through sports. According to research, sports are vital as they help execute important bodily functions and can be used to benefit various aspects of their lives. However, for this, you will need to involve other kids to make a team. That way, your child will learn the importance of group efficiency and working together.
Consider Your Home
All of these highlighted activities are fun learning activities that you can do with your child during the summer. However, you may feel that you do not have much room for some of these activities. As your family grows, perhaps it is time to look for a larger home, or a home with a bonus room or a bigger yard. If so, you should consider purchasing a house to enable you to provide all that you want for your family. The agents at Jeff Cook Real Estate are prepared to help you sell your home, or find a new one that is exactly what you need.

Let’s address the elephant in the room: you need a bigger home. After a year filled with makeshift home offices, virtual learning from the kitchen table, and spending the majority of your time indoors, you may have realized it’s time to upsize. Understand your space with these helpful tips.
Assess Your Space
Make a checklist of each room in your home to determine where you actually do the majority of your ‘living’ in. If you notice you’re filling your space with as many items as possible, it means you’re ready to upsize into a larger home. By figuring out where you need the additional space, you’ll have an easier time shopping for a new home that matches your checklist!
What’s Most Important to You?
Most people have a central reason they are moving: upsizing or downsizing. Are you new empty nesters with more bedrooms than you need? Are you needing a separate space for a home-office or virtual learning area for your kids? Do you plan to expand your family within the next few years and need additional bedrooms or kitchen storage? Take a moment to think through what your motive for moving is to narrow down your home search.
Understand Your Local Area
Once you determine what’s most important to you in a home, it’s time to connect with a Jeff Cook Real Estate agent. Our agents are trained experts in your local area. As a client, you’ll simply review your must-haves such as neighborhood, number of bedrooms, garage storage, etc., and your Jeff Cook Real Estate agent will be able to begin searching for your dream home. Jeff Cook Cares is a way for the individuals at Jeff Cook Real Estate to give back to their local community. With 9 locations across the state of South Carolina, Jeff Cook Real Estate has the opportunity to make a positive impact in the cities we’re located in. Over the past 4 years, our company has donated time and money to the causes that mean most to us through Jeff Cook Cares.
With 2020 came new obstacles to overcome. We had big plans for Jeff Cook Cares and found ourselves working from home wondering what to do next. In order to continue serving the community, Jeff Cook Cares had to get creative with how we could engage with the public while still following the health and safety regulations for COVID. Here are some of the ways we continued to give back to the communities surrounding our offices!
COVID Relief
First responders and medical staff were on our hearts so each week we sponsored lunch for hard working first responders and hospital workers in the surrounding area. Focusing on our neighbors was a main point of our mission so we chose local restaurants to support when buying lunch to give back to those working hard in our area. We provided Katie’s Krops and local teachers at Cathedral Academy lunch from small businesses such as Summerville Burrito Co. and Steel City Pizza.
Buy a Home, Give a Home
Buy a Home Give a Home was an initiative we launched in 2019, and in March of 2020 we had been planning for a Golf Tournament to benefit the initiative. The tournament was then pushed to June 2020 to follow the COVID guidelines for events in Charleston. Due to the immense amount of support from the community, Jeff Cook Cares is proud to announce that 7 homes in Peru and Nicaragua are almost complete because of the $70,000 we were able to raise! These homes will provide shelter and hope for the future for homeless families in need.
Moncks Corner Tornado Relief
In April of 2020, a storm hit an area of Moncks Corner and our company was told of a family in need. Their home was destroyed and Jeff Cook Cares was able to help the family and provide them with everything they would need to rebuild their home. Over 100 volunteers donated their time to come out and help clean the neighborhood where the storm hit the hardest. You can learn more about how Jeff Cook Cares was able to support Pam and her family here!

Day of Giving
In May, our company decided to encourage each office to choose the organization or cause they wanted to support in their community. Each of our 9 offices had the opportunity to give back to organizations such as Dorchester Paws, a local family in James Island, Camp Happy Days, Eagle Harbor Boys Ranch, Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center, Christ Central Ministries, Pilgrims in Women Shelter, first responders and hospital workers. Overall, Jeff Cook Real Estate offices raised over $6,000 in their efforts during the first annual Day of Giving!
Charleston Animal Society “Pawty”
Each year for Jeff’s birthday, the company sponsors animal adoptions at Charleston Animal Society. 100 dogs and cats found new homes in September! Jeff Cook Real Estate agents and employees spent time meeting the new owners, helping make enrichment toys for the animals, and touring the Charleston Animal Society to kick off the end of the event.
Raise the Roof in Uganda
A new initiative for 2020, Raise the Roof is an effort to support the building of a community center in Mbale, Uganda. The center will be used as a worship center, recreation center for the children and a place to store crops and serve meals to the community. Our company’s goal is to raise $70,000 total by matching $35,000 with Uganda Missions.
Closet of Hope
Closet of Hope is an organization providing clothing, bedding, toys and necessary supplies to children in foster care, kinship programs and adoptive families local to the Charleston area. Jeff Cook Cares donated over 50 backpacks to the children to use for the start of the school year and is currently participating in a toy drive for Christmas!
Christmas Giveback
Each year during the holidays, Jeff Cook Real Estate leadership asks the company if they know anyone in need this holiday season. Last year, Jeff Cook Cares was able to supply a single mother and her children with necessary household items and new shoes and toys for Christmas! Click here to read more about our contributions to the community in 2019!
Although this year presented our community with unique struggles, Jeff Cook Real Estate finds hope in the heart of this community. It’s clear that when we all come together, we can do immeasurably more than we can alone. Our company is proud to continue to serve, give, and sell homes. Our passion is not only helping clients buy and sell their homes, it’s bringing families together under the same roof.
Some of our favorite southern holiday dishes are listed below. Try one or try them all at your table this Thanksgiving!
Apple Cheddar Pie
Cheddar cheese has to be combined in this apple pie if it is to be Southern. It is added to the pie crust and is amazingly delectable. When you serve a double-crusted apple cheddar pie, people will want more than one piece most assuredly. If you are having a large gathering for Thanksgiving this year, then keep in mind that making just one of these pies likely will not be enough. Be ready to make two at least, or even more, because they are so good.
Creamy Confetti Corn with Bacon
When you are looking for a specialty dish that will go nicely with your Thanksgiving meal, then this southern dish will be a wonderful veggie side dish that will be extra pleasurable. The addition of the cheese and bacon to the corn make this a classy specialty dish that is impressive, festive, and colorful.
Cheesy Hash Brown Casserole
We all love comfort food. This casserole is another way to bring more comfort food to your table at Thanksgiving. It is quick to put together and it is a rather hearty dish. It will please most of your family members and guests, so you can rely on this dish being a real winner every time. It is packed with flavor and the cheese is the star of this dish. No dish can usually go wrong when it is loaded with tasty cheese.
Ultimate Green Bean Casserole
It would be very rare to have Thanksgiving in the south without an ultimate green bean casserole. Fried onions, green beans, and cream of mushroom soup simply have to go together to make this fine dish for a real Southern Thanksgiving. It is a traditional staple and is quick to make. Everyone loves this dish and there likely will not be any leftovers.
Cranberry Jello Salad
In many southern homes, you will notice cranberry Jello salad on the table during the celebration of Thanksgiving. This is really quite an old dish that has been enjoyed by many generations. This is a nifty replacement for regular cranberry sauce. If you still want regular cranberry sauce, by all means, you can have it. But it may be nice to add this dish as well this year for something different and refreshing.
Add on any of these scrumptious dishes to your turkey feast and expect everyone to clean their plates. The holidays are a wonderful time to make memories with your family in your new home. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Jeff Cook Real Estate!2020-11-23T11:50:00-07:002020-11-23T11:51:45-07:00Matt Serratotag:jeffcookrealestate.com,2012-09-20:8118Great Ways to Celebrate Mother's Day at Home
Being stuck at home may seem to have ruined a lot of festivities, but having to celebrate at home can pretty fun too, you just have to be creative. Here are some kid-friendly and low-cost ideas that you can do for Mother's Day.
DIY Mother's Day Gifts
Moms love activities they can do with their kids on this special day. So, what could be better than doing crafts with your mom and giving them to her as a gift? Here are some ideas for crafts that you can make with your mom to have an artsy experience:
Origami
Fingerprint painting
Photo scrapbook
Floral decorations
Egg carton flowers
Bracelets & necklaces
Wine cork animals
Flowers Surprise
Flowers are a classic gift for Mother’s Day. But this time you can present them with a twist. Prep yourself with the help of experts like Bouqs flower arrangement & delivery, then on the right day get up before your mom and hide several bouquets in each room for her to find. Attach a sweet note to each bouquet to tell her why she’s such a great mom.
Or why not tape a bunch of single flowers to a wall for creative decoration. Use the floral mural as a backdrop for a home photo session with your mother.
If you have a special gift, lead the way to it with flower petals and leaves. Your mom will appreciate the romantic gesture.
Create a Family Picnic Brunch
Your favorite sandwich cut into quarters
Your favorite snacks
Water bottles or sodas
Fruit
Dessert
Picnic blanket
Sunscreen
Board games, balls or frisbees
With these things, you'll be prepared for a relaxing and fun experience in nature.
Spa Day at Home
Everyone loves to have a day for themselves where they can relax and forget all the stress of daily life. You can surprise her by creating a spa day. Start by turning on some scented candles or an essential oil diffuser to create the spa mood along with some relaxing music. Then, you can make super easy infused detox water following these steps:
Fill a pitcher with iced water. Add a mixture of fruits and herbs. Let it chill for at least 30 minutes.
Now prepare yourselves for the day. Put on some comfy robes or loungewear and a pair of slippers. Find a place to sit and relax comfortably and just enjoy the scent, music, and fresh detox spa water.
Movie Marathon
Staying in bed, ordering in, and binge-watching your favorite movies or series is always a great and fun option for the whole family to celebrate Mother's Day.
Breakfast in Bed
You can start the day in the best way by cooking breakfast for mom to eat in bed. French toast is a fun, easy-to-cook, and kid-friendly option for this location and we have the best recipe for you:
French Toast Ingredients
2 eggs
1/2 cup of milk
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2 tablespoons of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
4 slices of box bread
1 pinch of salt
Bowl of the fruit of your choice
Maple syrup
Preparation
Beat the eggs along with all the other ingredients except for the bread and butter. Soak each bread slice for 10 minutes in the mixture. Make sure you flip it after the first 5 minutes. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Put a slice in it until golden brown and then flip it. Repeat with all the slices
Finally, decorate it nicely with the fruit and some maple syrup, prepare some fresh orange juice, and take it to your mom's room.

At Jeff Cook Real Estate, we value family. Our JCRE family has been staying safe and healthy while practicing social distancing and working remotely. We commend the first responders who are working the front lines to keep us all safe and are thankful to be able to still support our clients remotely.
Family and friends all over the world are finding new ways to connect with one another as we all learn to adapt and overcome. At Jeff Cook Real Estate, we’re learning that we can still serve our clients in the best way possible; even while completely remote. Here are a few ways we’ve found we can stay connected while keeping our social distance:
Video Calls
Almost everyone is using Zoom, Google Hangouts, or Facetime to tackle work while at home or to simply connect with their loved ones. At Jeff Cook Real Estate, our agents and employees are hosting Zoom Meetings to catch up with clients and collaborate with one another. Our against are conducting virtual open houses via zoom to help clients with their home buying or selling needs. Our Paint Party, featuring Wine & Design’s virtual services, allowed the entire company to come together for a few hours of creativity!
Learn Together
Ever wondered what your favorite animals at the zoo are up to all hours of the day? If you’ve got kids at home and want to take this opportunity to broaden their horizons, consider streaming a zoo’s webcam. Another idea is to host a virtual trivia night with friends and neighbors to cultivate learning in a fun way. Our agents are also conducting virtual home buying and selling webinars bi-weekly to help educate potential buyers and sellers on the real estate market.
Decorate the Outside of Your Home
Do you have a neighborhood Facebook Group? If so, you may have seen some of the encouraging messages children are writing along sidewalks and driveways to connect with those around them. If you want to leave your own message or simply destress with creating art, grab some sidewalk chalk and join in on the fun from afar.
Group Chat
You may already have a busy group chat with family members or close friends, but the more the merrier! Consider creating group chats for old friends you want to reconnect with or just friends you haven’t been able to see since the pandemic began. This is a great way to stay connected with friends from work, the gym, or school. Some suggested apps are Whatsapp, Groupme, or even House Party, where you can video chat and play interactive games with a group of friends!
Help a Neighbor in Need
Take this extra time as an opportunity to help out a neighbor in need who may not be able to get their own groceries or necessities. If you’re unsure of who may be in need of help nearby, post on your neighborhood Facebook group and offer to assist anyone who may need it. Expressing gratitude and appreciation for your neighbors is an encouraging way to stay connected while also social distancing.
Throughout a time of isolation and confusion, we can find hope by reaching out to our neighbors. Neighborhoods all over the country are leaving encouraging notes to be found by others out walking. Toilet paper, groceries, and other necessities are being delivered to at-risk neighbors who aren’t able to leave their homes. While it can be difficult at times to see a silver lining, remember to practice gratitude. At Jeff Cook Real Estate, we are available to help families stay safe in a new home and continue serving the community as we navigate the effects of the coronavirus.
When considering selling your home or even buying a new one during times of uncertainty, it’s important to rely on the experts that will get the job done. At Jeff Cook Real Estate, we understand that our clients need an expert to guide them through the home selling/buying process. An agent who knows the local area and can accurately determine your real estate needs is key when it comes to selling fast and receiving top dollar for your home. Although we are putting the health and safety needs of our clients, agents, and employees first, Jeff Cook Real Estate is still able to serve you virtually! 2020-05-04T08:40:00-07:002020-10-21T12:48:19-07:00Megan Garrelltag:jeffcookrealestate.com,2012-09-20:7186Top 5 Christmas Movies to Watch with Your Family This Year

Prepping a home for sale, whether you live in Charleston or another city, can be a serious undertaking. You know you need to get and keep your home in top shape in order to help it sell faster. However, if you’re a busy parent, achieving this is no easy feat. That’s why you need some helpful tips and tricks to make preparing your home and selling it easier to manage in an already busy family routine. Be sure to keep the following in mind:
Break Down Decluttering into Manageable Tasks
When kids are in the house, staying organized can feel stressful. If you’re looking around your home and feeling overwhelmed by clutter, know that you can go room by room to make sorting and getting rid of items much easier on your schedule. Tackle one or two areas each weekend, using designated bins to divide household belongings into purposeful piles. You’re likely to end up with things you need to toss, things you want to keep, and things you’re not quite sure what to do with yet. For the latter, you can think about renting a storage unit so your home won’t be cluttered for showings and open houses, but it’s really best to be as decisive as possible. Using a clutter scale can help you make better decisions when clearing your home. You can also follow these organizational tips to keep your home tidy.
Hire Professional Cleaners to Save More Time
If you want to sell your home, it needs a deep cleaning. That deep cleaning can take time and effort, both of which can be priceless commodities to busy parents. So instead of tackling it on your own, consider hiring a professional to do a thorough house cleaning. Having a weekly or bi-weekly cleaning session can be invaluable when you are trying to sell your home, and also trying to juggle your family’s schedule.
Devote Time and Effort to Improve Landscaping
Cleaning and decluttering the inside of your home before listing is always important, but you also need to stage the outside to attract more potential buyers. So take some time to clean up your yard, trimming down any overgrown plants, trees or bushes, and also repairing or refreshing swing sets that may already be in your backyard. If you have toys or other smaller items laying about, be sure to pick those up before you start showing your home. You can also invest in some landscaping upgrades, like fresh mulch and gravel, which will get your home off the market faster without costing you a fortune. Improving the landscaping is a good way to make a good first impression on homebuyers and increase your home’s curb appeal.
Have a Family Plan for Any Last-Minute Showings
With a spotless home and improved curb appeal, you’re sure to have more people dropping in to take a look at your home. While that can be good for sales, sometimes showings can come up at a moment’s notice. That can be stressful for families with children, but you can relieve that stress by being prepared with some family-friendly activities. Here in Charleston, there are so many activities and adventures for families to explore. Take your kids out to visit some historical areas or enjoy some outdoor time, so you won’t be stressed or bored when you need to get out of your home quickly. You can also implement these quick cleaning and organizational tasks to get your home show-ready for those last-minute showings.
Listing your family’s home doesn’t have to leave you stressed about preparing it to sell. You just need to plan ahead, if possible, to check those to-dos off your list and hire help when needed. Follow these easy steps to sell your home without added stress for your family.

2019-08-04T07:19:00-07:002022-09-27T05:18:50-07:00Cory Towlertag:jeffcookrealestate.com,2012-09-20:6001Decorating Your Home on a Budget Most of the time it is hard to get inspired. We get in a funk and have a hard time visually planning what our dream home should look like. That’s why we all need inspiration for decorating. But, making time to look for what appeals to our interests, or is eye-catching, isn’t always the trick when it comes to decorating our home.
I bet you have the same issues that most homeowners do when it comes to creating a more functional way of living. There is always the constant battle of where to get the right kind of inspiration.
Of course, there is always Pinterest. It has an overabundance of inspiring, aesthetic photos of beautifully decorated rooms and organized living space. Oh, how amazing it would be if MY home could be that wonderfully laid out.
But, as much as we want our homes to look “Pinterest Perfect” we have to face reality and try to make it work with what we already have.
For most, it isn’t easy to throw everything out and redecorate. I know most budgets don’t allow homeowners to redecorate hardly ever. Even though most crave the beautiful kitchen or family room, there is a way to stay inspired and keep pushing towards your end goal without starting from scratch.
Instead of pushing the budget or taking out a line of credit so you can have those awesome sofas you want, wait…take a step back. Little touches over time can go a long way.
Shop your home!
This is usually the first step in decorating your own home. Look around your home and see if you can repurpose furniture, or if you have some accessories that you can use in a different place or for a different purpose. Use books as décor accents, recover throw pillows, switch up your lampshades. The options are endless!
Simply…paint!
Never underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint. Paint old chairs, dressers, cupboards, mantels, or even a wall. This s a super affordable way to get a big update and get inspired.
DIY Art
Pieces of art always tend to be very expensive. So, try saving money by creating your own pieces! Simply picking out a favorite frame and printing out your favorite design can create a perfect art piece for any room.
Thrift Shop!
There is no shame in your game when finding what treasures you can find at your local thrift store. Sometimes you can score with great pieces that are perfect just the way they are, and sometimes you need to get a little creative with what you find! Either way, thrift shopping can be a great way to find pieces you wouldn’t normally see in stores.
By completely some simple steps, homeowners can collect, create, or recover pieces to create their very own “Pinterest Perfect” home.
And, remember, it is a process. It will all eventually come together as long as you keep an optimistic attitude.
“Focus on Improvement, Not Perfection”2018-07-05T07:15:00-07:002021-08-30T12:32:43-07:00Thomas "Jeff" Cooktag:jeffcookrealestate.com,2012-09-20:6024Southern Hospitality With AirBnbOne of Charleston’s finest characteristics is our residents’ undying commitment to southern hospitality. Charlestonians have so much rich history, culture, cuisine, and events to share with the world and Airbnb has made that so much easier to do. Many of our local friends have inquired about the possibility of sharing their homes through Airbnb so here are some great things to consider before proceeding on this hospitable adventure.
Before you list a home on Airbnb, residents need to contact the city’s Department of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability to obtain a short-term rental zoning permit. Prior to February 26, 2018, short term rentals were prohibited by the Charleston City Council. However, a task force was established to look into the possibility of allowing short-term rentals in the city, and here is what they are proposing to go into effect in April 2018:
Property owners must get a short-term rental permit.
Class 1 includes the Old and Historic District on the lower peninsula and only houses listed on the National Register of Historic Places are eligible for a short-term rental permit.
Class 2 is for the rest of the peninsula where only homes that are 50 years old or more can obtain short-term rental permits.
Class 3 will include the rest of the city beyond the peninsula where there will not be an age limit on the properties seeking short-term rental permits.
There will be NO whole-house rentals.
Property owners must be on your property while it is being rented out.
Property owners may not advertise with any signs on your property.
Property owners must have a general liability policy.
Property owners must update your Short-Term Rental permit each year.
*****For complete rules and explanations, be sure to contact your local city government office: Department of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability.
Once rental permits are obtained, listing extra rooms on Airbnb becomes quite simple. Begin by visiting the AirBnb.com website and create an account. Next, select the tab that says Become A Host. Following the prompts on the screen will help you easily get your space listed in no time flat. Here’s what you will be asked:
Home Type. Select Apartment, House, or other. From there, it will ask you to narrow down the type of property from a list that includes a tiny house, townhouse, chalet, cabin, etc. and ask you to clarify whether the guest will have a private room, shared room, or the entire space.
Beds Available. The prompts on the screen will continue to help you describe your space by asking how many beds are available, the room arrangements, or common areas that could be used for sleeping.
Bathrooms. Simply list the number of available bathrooms and if they will be shared by yourself or other guests.
Address. Enter the address of your property. This is not shared with anyone until they are confirmed guests.
Amenities. Here you will let guests know what amenities they will have such as sheets, towels, wifi, TV, heat, air conditioning, pools, hot tubs, etc.
Pictures. Airbnb will guide you through the process of adding photos to your listing and providing an inviting description of your property. Plan some DIY projects to elevate your space and make those pictures pop.
Additional Descriptions. This will allow you to add details to your description. Could it be the southern hospitality and the shrimp and grits, or are people trying to trade their snow boots for Rainbow sandals? While it's probably a mixture of all things we southerners call reality, what is the true underlying reason so many transplants now call this place a beautiful state home?
The population in South Carolina reached 4.9 million for the year 2016. Today, the Palmetto State is now home to 5.09 million people, thus making South Carolina the 24th most populated state in the country. With cities such as Greenville, Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head, and Mt. Pleasant, the reasonings become clear as to why South Carolina is a place people want to plant their roots. Seven months out of the year folks are wearing flip-flops and heading to the beaches and lakes for fun in the sun. The food scene in South Carolina is nothing short of delicious, so much so that narrowing down all the places to dine is a common problem for folks here. Not to mention the birthplace of sweet tea can be found in historic Summerville, SC, where the people are just as sweet as their tea.
If the large population increase and southern charm aren't convincing reasons enough to see what all the fuss is about, there are also some financial gains when you decide to relocate down south. The average house in South Carolina runs $121 per square foot and South Carolina also has lower sales tax than most other states; especially compared to those in the Northeast. Not to mention the cost of living is on average 13% lower than the national average cost of living. All of these benefits mean more money in your pocket and expanding that vacation bucket list!
The city of Charleston alone may be the cause of most of the population growth in the state of South Carolina. According to the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, the rate of population growth in Charleston nearly doubles the rate of population growth for the state itself. Also, being named ‘The #1 City in the U.S. and Canada' in Travel Leisure for the 5th consecutive year seems to help aid the ever-growing population rate. With the cobblestone streets and pastel-colored homes, it's easy to see why so many people want to move to Charleston and the surrounding areas.
From the rich heritage and diverse culture to the natural beauty and economical benefits, it becomes pretty obvious why so many people want to plant their roots here in South Carolina. Whether you're looking to relocate to the upstate or to the Lowcountry, you'll find yourself feeling right at home under a crescent moon here in South Carolina.2018-03-19T08:13:00-07:002021-01-20T13:55:54-07:00Cory Towler
